Going Vegan 101

So, you are interested. Perhaps I played a role in swaying you here :)

Let me keep it simple.

  • When you go to the market, go for the nut milk instead. Go for the vegan butters instead (Earthbalance brand is sold everywhere). If you can't find vegan cheeses and plant based meats at your market, find a health food store. Tofu, tempeh, and seitan are easy to find, delicious and versatile. Amy's/Gardein/Boca/Quorn brands have vegan products at most markets.
  • Get a few vegan cook books, follow a few blogs, and find vegan food social media pages for ideas and direction. There is a page on Facebook called 'What Fat Vegans Eat', it's amazing. Instagram has a page called 'Vegan Food Share'. You will find so much on these with suggestions to follow other vegan food pages. Not difficult. That's all it is. Read the labels and learn about the ingredients to avoid here.
  • You love eggs? Tofu scramble is better, cheaper, and healthier (breaking apart tofu and stir frying it). You love ice cream? Make some of my coconut cream based ice creams, or just go to the market. Vegan ice creams are sold everywhere these days and there is no difference.
  • Look at how you used to eat non vegan and just replace the animal product with a substitution. If you can't afford vegan meats and cheeses then just buy legumes; lentils, black beans, chick peas, tofu, tempeh, hummus, falafel, peas, etc. All versatile protein sources. Make veggie burgers, veggie meatballs, etc, and freeze them. Not all fake meats are vegan, check the box labels or google it. Gardein brand, Field Roast, and Beyond Meat taste the best. The others can have an acquired taste. Try them all, you'll love some and dislike others. 11 Vegan Meat Brands That Are Changing Everything
  • Start cooking more. Look up vegan places in your area and if you can afford to eat there, then eat there. If not, check out the menus of these vegan places and others, and try to make what they make, at home.
  • Oatmeal, most breads, jams, nut butters, beans, veggies, fruits, pasta, rice, potatoes, are all vegan. Most people eat these foods anyways. It's not as hard to go vegan as you may think. Don't give up before you try when most of your diet is naturally vegan and the rest you can substitute out in a delicious way with something else. You just need to inform yourself and try more.
  • Instead of meat in sandwiches and meals, do tofu, tempeh, hummus, falafel, potato bean patties, chick pea salad (mix with vegan mayo like tuna). Many other blogs have some crazy ways to make veggies taste like meats..check them all out.
  • People are doing a ton of innovative stuff with plants. Way more creative than the steak and potato or chicken nugget thing, not to mention healthy. Just guess how to make them, trial and error. You can't go wrong. Ask me if you need help. I will answer emails and make blog posts relevant to your questions. I can make a recipe out of limited ingredients. Some of my best meals were from when I only had a few things in my fridge and had to think up something that would be good.
  • Avoid palm oil. It's in almost everything these days but it's possible to find products without it. It destroys precious rainforests, causes huge pollution when they continually burn these forests, and destroys Orangutan habitats, leaving them burned, mamed, and scattered, dead and alone without their families. It's not considered vegan for this reason. 6 WAYS TO AVOID PALM OIL (AND WHY YOU SHOULD)
  • Honey is not vegan. Let the bees keep their honey. Before you call it extreme, read up on why. We have so many other alternatives, like agave, maple syrup, molasses, coconut nectar, etc. Go to the store and check out low glycemic natural sweeteners. Why is honey not vegan?

You can literally make your own nut milks, cheeses, butters, nut butters, mayo, falafel, hummus, veggie burgers, etc etc. This doesn't have to be expensive. It's not that hard and you can make large batches and store them.

Look in your closet. How much leather and fur and wool do you own? Check the labels if you're not sure. Donate the fur to an animal shelter. That is something you do not want to promote and support and unfortunately it is an industry that is growing and being glamorized. Look up the leather and wool industry too in the link below, it's not as nice as you may think. There are better options that don't involve torturing animals for fashion or perpetuating the philosophy of using animals for our needs rather than using technology.

Look in your bathroom. How many products do you own that have animal ingredients and are tested on animals. Use them up, buy your next ones vegan. These links will give you the companies that are vegan and non vegan so you can buy ethical next time.

These Companies DON’T Test on Animals

These Companies Test on Animals, Never Buy These Brands

Look in your other cabinets. Many of your products have been tested on animals, from household cleaners to bleach to cigarettes etc. Sounds crazy, right? Well, it happens, especially with beagles. Check out this link below of more info.

Companies That Test on Animals (2016 Update)

Do you adopt animals? Instead of supporting puppy mills and breeders, go to your nearest animal shelter or rescue and adopt an animal that really needs a home and is already vetted. Especially one that is on a kill list, and especially one that is older.  Everybody goes for the kittens and puppies, give one a home that nobody is rushing to get and is on their last life. You won't regret it. They are more appreciative, they are as healthy, and they are quick to adapt.

Top Reasons to Adopt a Pet

Do you visit places or pay for entertainment in which animals are cruelly exploited? Horse carriage rides, elephant rides, walking with lions, bear parks, snake shows and snake charmers, swimming with dolphins, animal fights, crocodile farms, holding sea turtles, dancing monkeys, touring civet coffee farms, zoos, circuses, Sea World, aquariums, tiger temples, paid pictures with animals, etc? Don't. These animals are enslaved. They are commodified and humiliated. If it's not ok to do to a human, don't justify it for an animal. These industries are cruel, bottom line.
