Heat does not kill the beneficial fats in coconut products versus in many other food forms. Coconut contains medium chain fatty acids, making it a healthy saturated fat. Their small cell structure and unique absorption process (only 3 steps to be converted to energy versus 26 steps for other fats) allows them to be readily used for energy rather than stored. It is highly digestible, potent in antioxidants, anti microbial, promotes hormone balance due to the healthy fats, and anti-fungal, just to name a few.

11 reasons to add coconut oil and coconut products into your regime; 1)Reduces inflammation- Inflammation leads to disease, pain, and poor health. 2)Prevents and reverses cancer- Chemical components in the breakdown of coconut oil kill cells that lead to cancer and prevent it from growing. 3)Immune boosting- Because coconut oil is anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-parasitic, it promotes a healthy gut and body, making it difficult for disease to grow, including candida. 4)Energy- Your body uses glycogen (from grains and sugars) to burn as fuel before it starts burning fat. Because it doesn’t need enzymes to be broken down, it eases the pancreas and gallbladder. Also it helps treat candida, a fungal overgrowth in the gut which leads to all sort of complications, helping digestion, reducing ulcers, and promoting a healthy probiotic intestinal environment. 8)Skin, hair, nails, and gums/teeth- Coconut is great for using as a base for all your cosmetic needs. It is antimicrobial and can heal many skin disorders. It has natural sun protecting agents, is a great moisturizer and can be used as a facial wash. Tooth pulling is swooshing coconut oil in your mouth for up to 20 minutes, has been used for centuries, and significantly reduces the bacteria that leads to periodontal and gum disease. 9)Bone/muscle health- Coconut oil helps increase calcium absorption and bone volume and structure. It is great osteoporosis, reducing bone loss, and fighting the oxidative stress that accompanies it. Along with burning fat, this oil builds muscle and is used in many muscle building shakes and drinks. 10)Diabetes protection- This oil provides a consistent energy source that is not insulin dependent and can take stress off the pancreas to overcompensate. 11)Fat burning- Research on coconut oils fat burning properties are vast. 4 Superfood Raw Ball Recipes

Yields: 25 balls

  • Base
  • 2 cups oats (dried or steel cut)
  • 1/2 cup raw coconut shreds or flakes
  • 1/2 cup almond meal or flour, or raw almonds
  • 1/2 cup coconut flour (can sub for more almonds or coconut)
  • 8 medjool dates, buy with pits and de-pit them, soak in 1/2 cup warm water for 5 minutes before adding
  • 2 tbsp chia
  • 1/4 cup melted coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Banana Mixture
  • 1/3 of a ripe to black banana
  • 2 tbsp melted cocoa butter
  • Peanut Butter Mixture
  • 2 tbsp peanut butter
  • Chocolate Mixture
  • 2 tbsp cocoa
  • 2 tbsp melted cocoa butter
  • Sweet Potato Mixture
  • 4 tbsp sweet potato (I used purple)
  • 1 tbsp melted cocoa butter
  • optional things to add to the base or mixtures; mashed strawberries, jam, raspberries, almond butter, blueberries, matcha, açai powder, blackberries

Mix all the base ingredients in a food processor until it is flour-like and pour into a bowl. Ration a half cup of the base into 4 bowls and add the contents of each mixture in to the separate bowls. Mix each batter and roll into balls. Everything should roll up easy, but if it's too wet then add some extra coconut shred/almond meal/oats to your hands for rolling. If it's too dry, add an extra tbsp syrup or coconut oil, but do not add water or vegan milk as that will just make it loose and overly wet. You could also add jam or mashed fruit which will make them a little extra sweet. They will harden up at room temp due to the cocoa butter and coconut oil, so feel free to refrigerate them or freeze them as they taste best cold. If you want to bake them then put the balls on a cookie sheet and bake at 350F for 10 minutes.
